چکیده

An important kind of semantic conflicts arising in database interoperability are schematic discrepancies, where data in one database correspond to metadata in another. We present a general solution to these discrepancies, based on a framework of two dimensions: generalization and aggregation. Operations to transform metadata into data and vice versa are defined, in the relational model and in an object-oriented model. These operations may be applied at different levels in a federated architecture. Keyword Codes: H.2.5

Working Paper Alfred P. Sloan School of Management Database Systems in a Dynamic Environment Database Systems in a Dynamic Environment Received Context Interchange: Overcoming the Challenges of Large-scale Interoperable Database Systems in a Dynamic Environment*

Research in database interoperability has primarily focused on circumventing schematic and semantic incompatibility arising from autonomy of the underlying databases. We argue that, while existing integration strategies might provide satisfactory support for small or static systems, their inadequacies rapidly become evident in large-scale interoperable database systems operating in a dynamic en...

Resolving Schematic Discrepancy in the Integration of Entity-Relationship Schemas

In schema integration, schematic discrepancies occur when data in one database correspond to metadata in another. We define this kind of semantic heterogeneity in general using the paradigm of context that is the meta information relating to the source, classification, property etc of entities, relationships or attribute values in entity-relationship (ER) schemas. We present algorithms to resol...

An ontology based approach to the integration of entity-relationship schemas

In schema integration, schematic discrepancies occur when data in one database correspond to metadata in another. We explicitly declare the context that is the meta information relating to the source, classification, property etc of entities, relationships or attribute values in entity-relationship (ER) schemas. We present algorithms to resolve schematic discrepancies by transforming metadata i...

The Information Integration Wizard (IWiz) Project

Integration of heterogeneous data sources has been the motivation for research projects throughout many years [2, 3, 6, 10, 11, 21]. The paradigm shift from centralized to client-server and distributed systems, with multiple autonomous sources producing and managing their own data, has created a great demand for data and systems integration. In order to combine information from independently ma...

A Conflict Resolution Environment for Autonomous Mediation Among Heterogeneous Databases

Our objective in this research is to develop a formal framework and methodology to facilitate semantic interoperability among distributed and heterogeneous information systems. The primary research question is, “how do we identify and resolve various dataand schematic-level conflicts among such disparate information sources?” A comprehensive formal framework for managing various semantic confli...
